Location & Description
At more than 11,500 ft, the Yumthang Valley in North Sikkim Eastern Himalayas is a long valley rising north towards Zero point and flanked on both sides by tall mountain peaks generally covered by snow.
Lachungchu glacial river, a main distributary of Teesta river, flows through yak grazing pasture on rolling meadows and surrounding mountains are covered with tall conifers.
It is part of the Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary, the home of many species of the rhododendrons, the State flower of Sikkim. During spring time the whole valley is transformed to a multicolored carpet of flowers. That is why Yumthang valley is also known as Sikkim valley of flowers. A permanent hot spring in the valley adds to its attraction.
A Chorten and a forest rest house, the only permanent residence in the valley are the signs of human habitation in the valley.
